How to adopt or rehome a dog
Getting a dog from us for
adoption or rehoming
couldn't be simpler. Learn how to choose the ideal
dog for you and your family in just five easy steps.
Step 1:
Find a dog or puppy online
We
care for all different types of dogs, including puppies, older dogs, small,
active dogs, and a wide variety of breeds like australian shepherds, Labrador, Cocker spaniel and Golden retriever.
We
have dogs who have been abused and abandoned; they have never lived in a
loving, family environment. Some may have been conceived while under our care.
In
either case, each of our pets already has a backstory and personality!
Begin
looking for a dog right now.
Step 2:
Complete a rehoming application form
When
you've located "the one," print and complete an application. Make
arrangements to visit the center where the dog you want is being rehomed, and
bring your filled-out application with you.
Complete
the application form
The
center's staff or volunteers will talk with you about the information you've
provided and the requirements of the dog you've selected. They'll set up a
meeting if they think you and the dog you've selected are a good fit.
Step 3: Get
to know your chosen dog
It's
time to get to know one another if everyone believes the dog you selected is the best one for you.
You
might be asked to schedule a second visit to
the center because it's best for everyone in the household to meet the dog to
rule out allergies or other difficulties.
Step 4: Home visit
One
of our adoption support volunteers will pay you a visit to talk with you about
your new dog and offer advice on what to do next. For instance, putting a
blanket or t-shirt at the kennels
helps them grow used to your scent and offers them something recognizable to
take with them when they go home.
Your
home visitor will give you plenty of advice on how to care for your dog, as
well as any lifestyle changes that may be made to help you and your dog settle
into a safe, secure, and fulfilling life together. Information on preparing
your house and garden may be included in this avoiding risks, purchasing the
proper collar and lead, ID tags, food, a bed, and toys.
Step 5:
Collect your new dog!
It's
time to return to the center to get your new family member formally signed over
once everyone is satisfied that your chosen dog is the best dog for you and
that your home is suitable and ready for its newest resident.
Your
new dog will be completely vaccinated, microchipped, spayed or neutered, and
treated for fleas and worms. All of this is covered by the one-time adoption
fee.
The
adoption fees are determined independently by each of our centers and differ
for adult dogs and pups under six months. While we are unable to provide our pets
for free, your adoption Fees cover several veterinary costs that would
ordinarily accrue after purchasing a pet, including microchipping and
neutering.
Settling in
Be
patient and don't panic if there are a few snags as your new dog adjusts to you and your home. Your new dog may be anxious during this time. Any questions you
might have can be answered by your neighborhood rehoming center..
After a few weeks, we'll set up a visit from our adoption support volunteer to see how everyone is doing. This is a fantastic chance to ask questions and, if necessary, receive additional support.
